Around the Mountains Cycle Trail Accommodation

The Around the Mountains Cycle Trail can be ridden in either direction so this helps when booking accommodation.

There is a reasonable choice in Kingston which should suit all budgets. From the Kingston Holiday Park and Motel, to holiday homes and historic places like the Kingston Homestead. Be aware that the village is very busy over the Christmas and New Year holiday period so you must book well in advance. Many places don’t allow single night stays during holiday times so consider that in your planning. Food options are also limited, there is only one cafe/restaurant/bar/corner shop and it tends to stop serving food around 7:30pm.

For a small village, Garston has a surprising amount of small but quality accommodation. Menlove Homestay B&B, Naylor House, the Garston Hotel and Castle Hill Lodge to name a few.

Try the Athol Lodge and Holiday Park or some of the small holiday Homes.

The lovely Nokamai Station has plenty of accommodation but is a bit of a detour off the trail along an 11km gravel road. Be aware that it is often fully booked by fishermen in the height of summer.

5 Rivers

The 5 Rivers Cafe does great coffee and lunches but has no accommodation. There are a few houses here that may be available for rent. Part way between 5 Rivers and Lumsden is the 5 Rivers Retreat B&B.

The opening of the cycle trail has allowed Lumsden to open some lovely accommodation options, from accommodation associated with Route 66, holiday homes, the Lumsden Motel, and the newly refurbished Lumsden Hotel. There are also several cafes, the hotel and Route 66 so you have dining options and the new supermarket allows you to stock up on supplies.

Smaller than Lumsden, Mossburn, the deer Capital of New Zealand, is home to the historic Mossburn Railway Hotel

Mavora Lakes

The only accommodation here is the DOC camp site. Either plan to ride the 100km between Mossburn and Walter Peak Station in one day, arrange for a shuttle pick up, ride with a support vehicle, or pack a tent 🙂

St Nicholas Station

The station has a luxury cabin for 2 or, the more basic shearers quarter for up to 20.

Walter Peak Station

The Lodge at Walter Peak Station sleeps up to 10 people although it has limited room configurations. It can only be booked as one booking, regardless of the number of people.
